The Ultimate 5-Step Facial Massage Guide for Busy Days

Skincare expert Rhian Truman's tips for elevating your skincare routine

If you’re looking for a quick yet effective way to boost your skincare routine, facial massage is something you can easily add to your existing steps. Not only does it improve circulation, reduce puffiness, and give your skin that coveted glow, but it’s also a great way to relax and take a moment for yourself—even when you’re short on time. Skincare expert and facialist, Rhian Truman gives us a super simple 5-step facial massage that you can easily fit into your morning or evening routine, using products you already have.

Step 1: Under-eye Massage – Brighten Your Eyes in a Minute

Let’s face it, under-eye circles and puffiness can make us look more tired than we feel. A quick under-eye massage while applying eye cream can make a huge difference.

How to do it:

Gently apply your eye cream with your ring finger—the lightest touch finger, perfect for this delicate area but don’t be afraid to press a little; your skin can handle it! Lightly tapping or circling under the eyes will stimulate circulation, helping you achieve that bright, well-rested look.

Step 2: Serum Massage – Boost Circulation in 2 Minutes

Once your eyes are refreshed, it’s time to work on the rest of your face. Massaging your serum into the skin not only helps with absorption but also improves circulation and gives your skin a healthy, rosy glow.

How to do it:

Use your middle and ring fingers to apply the serum in upward, tapping motions. This technique, called Tapotement, lifts the skin and warms it up, which improves blood flow and oxygenates the tissues. Focus especially on your forehead—this is great for minimising fine lines!

For those pesky crow’s feet around the eyes, flick upwards with your ring finger. For a little extra detox, sweep down along the sides of your face to promote lymphatic drainage.

Step 3: Moisturiser Massage – Fight Gravity in 1 Minute

Everyone’s heard it before—always apply your skincare in upward motions to fight the effects of gravity. This is especially true when applying your moisturiser, which locks in hydration and keeps your skin looking plump and firm.

How to do it:

Using your fingers, apply moisturiser with upward strokes, gently lifting the skin. For an added boost, you can also work on your lymph nodes. Use downward strokes toward your collarbone (yes, downward works here!) and rub behind your ears to encourage lymphatic flow. It’s a quick step that helps with puffiness and gives your skin a refreshed look.

Step 4: Evening Face Oil – Balance Your Skin in 1 Minute

If you’re worried about face oils making your skin oily, don’t be! The right oils can actually balance your skin’s moisture levels, whether you have dry, oily, or combination skin.

How to do it:

Apply a few drops of a lightweight oil like rosehip oil—it’s fantastic for oily and combination skin because it absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue. Gently massage it in with upward motions, just like your moisturiser. Oils like rosehip are great at balancing your skin’s pH, keeping your complexion healthy and radiant.

Step 5: Gua Sha – Detox and Sculpt in 2 Minutes

Now for the fun part—if you have an extra minute or two, grab a Gua Sha tool. This ancient technique is amazing for lymphatic drainage and can even help with breakouts by moving toxins out of the skin.

How to do it:

After applying your face oil (which gives the perfect amount of slip), use your Gua Sha to gently massage your face and jawline. Focus on areas where you might experience breakouts, like the chin and jawline. The cooling sensation from a refrigerated Gua Sha also adds an extra soothing effect. You can keep your Gua Sha in the fridge, or if you're short on space, a simple cup of water works to keep it cool and refreshing!
